Possibly further than a satellite. Since a couple of months I regularly see flashes of lights in the night sky and wonder what they are. I started seeing the flashes this year (2022), usually between 8 and 10 PM ET. I pick up these what I call Point Flashes very frequently on my meteor spotter skycam. Still none the wiser. It isnt lightening, Ive checked the radars and weather satellites and there is no storm action or lightning around anywhere near here. I have also studied the UFO phenomenon fairly extensively and these fit the unidentified qualifier, but theres likely a very scientific explanation. I have seen them on occasion. Unfortunately, the greatest flashes in theuniversesupernovas have been avoiding our neighborhood since before the telescopes invention. Crazy. Also, sprites are much larger than these single flashes. My conclusion for many of the pinpoint flashes are that they are the result of space junk burning up, which are on a gravitationally caused trajectory directly towards the observer on Earth relatively speaking, as these pieces reach the required velocity for frictional burning up in oxygenated atmosphere, as opposed to meteor objects burning up as the Earth flies through old comet tales and producing the more sweeping light trails in the sky. Great description, exactly what we are seeing here in The Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia on a mountain with minimal light pollution, its like a camera flash as far away as the stars, stationary, multiples, each individual flash around every 20-30 seconds. I see at least one every time I am outside for an hour or so. Starlink satellites are always moving and are not in GSO/GEO. Ive seen these single flash events with my naked eye many times. They are meteors that come directly at earth then explode when they hit the atmosphere. I just dont believe that TLEs explain the phenomena.
